our hero, jo tongo (born joseph ekambi tongo mpondo) was born and raised in douala cameroon. in 1964 he headed off to paris to begin pharmaceutical studies. somewhere along the way the music in his soul eventually won out and he embarked on a life of music. in the latest of our series of funk experimentals lps we dig for the funk. not necessarily the artists greatest hits but most definitely the funkiest ear benders. we proudly compile together tracks from 1968 to 3 new brand new exclusive tracks from present day 2017. and yes, they all have the funk. in spades.

trained multi-genre dancer, dj, producer, mc and pure force of energy: meet william djoko, the latest talent from one of house music s foremost cities, amsterdam. djoko s effervescent performances and eclectic musical melange of disco, tech, afro, leftfield and straight up house first earned him a name in his native stomping grounds at places like trouw and are now propelling him onto the international dj circuit with slots at london s printworks and elrow town, circoloco in ibiza and concrete in paris among others. cutting his production teeth in the late zeros on amsterdam imprint thirtyonetwenty, william has gone on to release tracks on rush hour, mobilee, tuskegee and, most notably, tom trago s voyage direct label, as well as delivering remixes for the likes of darius syrossian and anja schneider. omg, william s quirky, colourful debut for strictly features vocals from jazz man camilo and remixes from the original king of new york house, todd terry. the todd terry in house mix is exclusive to the vinyl release.

mick has been active in the seedier corners of electronic music for more than 30 years, first immersing himself in the world of hi-nrg and new wave before embracing the house, techno, acid and electro explosion of the late 1980s. aligned with dj hell in the 90s and more recently the intergalactic fm crew, hes the quintessential selector. a life spent digging in the undergrowth for deviant dance music has given him the edge that makes a truly gifted spinner, without riding on hype or studio productions. however, mick isnt adverse to the odd outing on vinyl, having previously appeared on international dj gigolos both solo and as the kinky lovers with sometime partner isabella venis, but these moments are few and far between. for this release on arma, mick has given us two edits that speak to his distinctive style as a dj the original tracks are cult choices re-moulded into deadly, subversive club weapons. the brooding darkwave of himmelfahrt 89 is enough to turn the most indifferent bar crowd into swaying, baying denizens of the night, while stay silent pummels out a relentless electro motif that teeters on the edge of destruction for 11 thrilling minutes. these arent crowd-pleasing dj tools, and neither are they slick and easy edits of obvious classics. this is a peek into the inner workings of a man with decades of experience working masses of flesh into a sweaty fever pitch using sounds youve never heard before. the mastering on micks edits was undertaken by none other than dutch electro legend rude 66, while the striking artwork on the sleeve sees arma reach out for the first time to french artist judex. the nerve-shredding, broken op-art assault was originally found in a book published by cult illustrator sam rictus.

the album is a collection of wonderful, emotional and very personal songs. written and performed by peter wangel, the lyrics are inspired by multi award winning, temporary norwegian writer karl ove knausgard and deal with very personal subjects from his own life. “the previous releases were about the “lonely” feelings, the feelings that only existed in me, the feelings i wanted to set free for a long time. the new album is about my life as it is right now, about all the thoughts, expectations, worries and the happiness that comes with a new life as a family. this is a very personal album, but i also hope to express something very ordinary and something that most people can relate to.- also musically the album is a big step forward for wangel, the melodies are still subtle, but offer more nuances and colors.

finally a fresh mcde is announced! new one from long time deep house/broken producer, pablo valentino... . its been four years since label co-founder pablo valentino became a daddy, and almost as old is the idea of him releasing a record on our imprint. so what makes more sense than to dedicate this record to hugo-joão, his son? on -my son s smile- we can hear a recording of hugo-joão s laughter over a mellow, summery house track that has been a big favorite of danilo over the years. with a little help from lyon producer patchworks, who played bass on the track, valentino pulls off one of his most sophisticated productions yet.

unknown mobile has quietly carved out a place for himself in the ever-evolving vancouver beat camp among contemporaries like mood hut, 1080p and project pablo. last years no motion 12 on a/s/l singles club was levi bruces dreamy introduction to most, and 2017 finds him stretching out a bit to further expand his palate of rhythms and textures across the five track mixed use ep for young adults. four sided pebble is a breezy bouncer woven with tickled keys, raw bass and a seamlessly organic live feel throughout. shoreline dub pulses in stuttered syncopation, but keeps its sights set on the dusk dusted horizon with delayed rhodes chords and ocean swells. country side is a total mind-melt, a pastoral graze through mazes of circuit board crop circles. the juggler churns a buttery 4/4 beat in an echo chamber, while proteus 216 dims the lights on its way out to an interstellar communications convention.

tokyo based techno label human lessons is proud to announce our very first vinyl release of confusion. this ep is quite deluxe because it s the exactly a year ago the label has officially started and thus we wanted to do something special this time. the boss of the label emika elena worked two tracks with one of the best producers in japan ryogo yamamori. human lessons welcomes great producers as remixers, half of the hiss:1292 duo swiss producer opuswerk, who releases for dement3d, and farceb is one of the most promising newcomers in argentina, he recently provided his podcast for polegroup. the ep contains 4 tracks, things kick off with paranoid is a perfect track for peak time. paradox is simultaneously deep and unique, opusweak remix is for later hours and farceb delivers a minimalistic remix.

shintaro.d is new on the scene, but this promising japanese producer follows up on his debut on his own label init with this assured 12inch for jus groove it, taking the stripped down deep house template and injecting it with an off-kilter approach to sound design that subtly makes for one of the most effective dj tools heard in recent memory. that track in question is kohisikarubeki, and its remix by rhythm & soul takes those intricately carved shards of sound design and smooths them into a more conventional house music shape. the b-side finds shintaro.d turning out more of that subversive, future-minded deep house business, with waganamidakana being a clear highlight.

coming to life on a hazy cloud of natural instrumentation and meditative composition, modern manners tap into the appetite for delicate new age musings beautifully on this debut release. amor y odio is laced with spanish guitar musings that spiral out over a simple but effective drum break that harks back to classic downtempo, while running with me edges towards a more sprightly lounge headspace while retaining the rich musicality felt on the first track. instant illusion is propelled by a bassline that wouldn t sound out of place on a house track, but here its punching out in a subtle, laid back environment that aims to get you horizontal in the most sophisticated way possible.

dutch producer and live act conforce is back with autonomous , a fifth artist album and the latest in his long relationship with delsin records. conforce is boris bunnik, a producer who explores the deepest realms of dub, house, techno and electro under many different names. his conforce alias is where his most club orientated material comes from and this new nine track album finds the transcendent label boss producing dark syntheses inspired by his hometown and harbour city, rotterdam, and its automated industries. a masterfully conceptual album that really paints a vivid picture of a harbour as heard from deep down in the depths.

stephen laubner never fails to deliver the goods, whether on his own label something or elsewhere. having recently popped up on the untold stories, this time around hes dropping his uniquely crusty compositions on synthetic gold. after a quietly disconcerting ambient opening, the leftfield grind of the taphead pushes an uncompromising agenda of ragged bass and an unrelenting groove. october sunrise by way of contrast is a more intimate, sweet natured affair. syntax error too taps into the softer side of laubner s craft in a most mesmerizing of ways, but for the die hard fans fear not, there s also plenty of locked groove loops included to keep you tripping into infinity.

there is a long-standing love affair between dj harvey and pikes, ibiza. as well as coming back for his third consecutive ‘mercury rising’ residency, the legendary ‘djs’ dj has been appointed ‘cultural attaché’ for pikes, meaning his magic touch and feel-good presence will create even more special moments at pikes this summer, including the launch of new label, pikes records.
in 2015 dj harvey made his hugely anticipated return to ibiza and made pikes his home for his mercury rising debut, a concept inspired by the beauty of the real ibiza, the incredible history of pikes and a genuine love for music. the love, the dancing, the music and the balearic spirit perfectly and poetically encapsulated by dj harvey has seen mercury rising widely recognised as the most special night to embrace the island in over a decade.
the next step in the harvey and pikes story sees him launch pikes records – the first record label founded by pikes owners and ibiza rocks co-founders andy mckay and dawn hindle. on the label, harvey explains: i see so many avenues to work together to release music, everything from live recordings from ibiza rocks and pikes, mix tapes, original productions, showcasing new artists, theres all sorts of avenues to open up. with the finer details still under wraps, its safe to say fans can look forward to the first release being harveys very own mercury rising compilation. but what can we expect from the third instalment of mercury rising? putting it quite simply, just a serious good time really says harvey.

demonstrating his incredible ability to incorporate world sounds into his music, satori mesmerises with umama. amidst a soiree of african percussion is a soothing hypnotic chant, all encased in alluring synths. italian legend riva starr’s jazzy take on the original, integrates the chanting vocal as a futuristic anthem. louie vega maintains an ethnic feel. his remix, alongside an instrumental, encompasses futuristic synths with a sturdy kick throughout.

nyc’s disco powerhouse west end records should need no intro. the home of too-numerous-to-list club classics for over 30+ years is still impacting today on what we know to be club culture. the label started by one mel cheren (rip) with assistance from larry levan and more way back in 1976 is still held in such high regard today with it’s catalogue constantly being played, rediscovered, reinterpreted and loved by waves and waves of new fans and admirers.
the west end story vol. 4 is an essential overview of this most iconic of labels and some of it’s more under the radar output, following on it’s from it’s predecessor the quality bar is obviously set extremely high, one only has to look over the tracklist to see the names and titles that are included! rare and overlooked cuts from sparque, debbie trusty, barbara mason, ednah holt and more make up 4 joyous sides of essential forward looking post disco classics - we’re talking late 70’s, early 80’s, synths, mega overdubs, left-field arrangements and anything and everything in-between.
a truly golden era of dance music history, names like tom moulton, tom savarese and more make up some of the talent featured on this flawless selection of goodies. oh, and for the record (no pun intended) these are all the extended mixes, 12” versions and special cuts, all killer - no filler! all tracks featured re-mastered, re-pressed and re-released with the permission of and in conjunction with west end records, new york city / bmg.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin’ records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called “fairy godmother of house” abigail adams, movin’s first output was ‘i’ve got the music’ by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up “jersey jams” that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin’ records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin’ records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve ‘lucky’ benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line “i love this place”. the ‘place of worship’ mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

having become one of the uk’s most exciting acts over the past few years releasing their bass-heavy brand of garage and grime across labels like black butter and mta, my nu leng go back to their roots as they deliver their very first drum & bass ep. and as you’d expect from a duo who’ve been drawn in to remix the likes of naughty boy, rudimental and clean bandit, it’s big and it’s very, very clever.

the new album of dj hell zukunftsmusik keeps bringing us good news. the latest single to drop from the album, car car car, arrives with remixes from some of the scenes most enigmatic producers. roman fluegel presents his own eclectic and diverse interpretation in a playful and artistic vibe, while phil kierans autobahn remix is a straight, deep and dark version of the original track, which is featured on the vinyl too.

west side story became the smash hit stage musical of 1957 through a combination of leonard bernstein’s dramatic score with jerome robbins exuberant dance routines. the long awaited film version arrived in 1961 and starred richard beymer as tony, rita moreno as anita and natalie wood as maria. its original soundtrack album clocked up 53 weeks on top of the billboard stereo albums chart and 12 on the mono, making it the album with the most weeks at number 1 of the rock (post 1955) era.

dutch dj, producer and dekmantel family member young marco kicks things off with a beautiful, melodic, waterfall of a track. it’s a record you’ll want to play out on a yacht, while sipping on a rosé under the warm, afternoon sun. 2017 has been nothing short of an epic year for marco, having already compiled the second in the selectors compilation series for dekmantel, in addition to having released the second lp as gaussian curve, alongside gigi masin, and johnny nash. marco is in good company, as dutch-based artist suzanne kraft crafts a delightful, ambient-meets-house, summer groove, that lives at the most relaxed of paces, sitting side-by-side on the a-side. flip the record over and dekmantel favourite, and dutch house institute tom trago finds himself in a moment of blissful summer haze, with soft, sonic-pallets and waving melodies. concluding the record is long serving dekmantel mainstay, and rednose distrikt main-man awanto 3 with an analogue, and feel-good, electro-beat rhythm.

uwe schmidt has long been recognized as one of electronic musics most respected and versatile artists. a man of many talents, projects and identities including atom heart and senor coconut, uwes playfully ironic and acid- tinged atom tm moniker is perhaps the identity that most speaks to the new york dancefloors where the bunker makes its home. several atom tm releases are much-loved bunker classics and with the future nights 12inch uwe offers a heady experiment in what happens when a track takes you so far inside your own head that you’re in danger of losing your way back. . the a side is comprised of two fuzzy vocal techno tracks that are as fun to listen to as they will be to subject to some heavy tweaking in the hands of a capable dj. the b side, chemistry is particularly versatile and crazy-making with elements of darker techno stirred into a disorientingly stereophonic maelstrom that’s guaranteed to cause a dancefloor to lose its moorings until the only thing keeping reality from splintering is the tracks dry academic vocal reassuring us that its all just chemistry

a return to the source: ribcage is where it all began for the dubfire project. after years of exploring, subverting and setting brave new benchmarks in the house world, this marked the start of ali shirazinia setting out to set the same creative benchmarks in techno. restrained, drawn-out but beastly when it wanted to be, the original was a serious statement of intent. even at the time you got a sense it was going to be a historic tune. loco dice especially felt that when he signed it to desolat 10 years ago. to celebrate this time-flying milestone, dubfireÆs recruited two of the most respected names possible for remix duties. first up, the unstoppable, unavoidable, unquenchable dense & pika who keep within the dramatic rising template but with a whole new set of instruments and texturesà and a percussion palette that absolutely sizzles when the whole groove kicks in mid-way. phenomenal. hot on their heels comes a unique remix invitation to on-u legend and one of the ukÆs most decorated and treasured studio controllers adrian sherwood. turning in a serious techno re-cut that pays tribute to every element and takes over 12 minutes to make sure they each shine amid the head-twisting pools of tripped-out decay, itÆs clear his time with pinch has had a profound effect. two incredibly well considered and detailed remixes that remind you what remixes should beà brave new chapters of a story we all love being told. these will sound great when the 20th anniversary remixes are commissioned in 2027.

following a superb remix of hakimonus æinsular realms in 2015, ed davenports inland alias returns to deepa & biris black crow recordings with a brand new ep for the labels tenth release. having played a key role in the relaunch of functions infrastructure new york imprint, in addition to operating his own widley admired counterchange label, davenports techno project has brought the englishman to wider recognition as one of the genres most talented producers. the new eps three original tracks finds inland exploring all facets of his diverse sound: a1, æmetatlantic is driving, acid-laced techno, æcosinaxis, employs electro beat patterns and idm aesthetics, b-side opener, ælagoon9, is a melodic detroit-indebted big room weapon. closing out the ep is a remix of from 3kz aka italian duo z.i.p.p.o & kaelan, the latter of whom provided one of black crows standout releases so far under his 2030 alias with last years timeworm ep. their remix of æcosinaxis follows hot on the heels of their debut album æparallel reflections, released earlier this year on z.i.p.p.o.s fides imprint.

90s freak-beat enthusiasts may recognize this record as oringally released on temple records new york in 1995. we are such fans of the label that we ve teamed up with khan (aka bizz od, 4e, gizz tv....) to start a new series of releases pulling from temple s vaults. the first in the series sees khan and brother cem (aka jammin unit and 1/2 of the legendary air liquide) unleashing a torrent of acid-tinged jack in the form of you make me function and fun house . drummy madness for the most unhinged hours of the dance. pressed on clear vinyl and bearing the original temple logo as homage to the label.

the second ep of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album presents two more striking reinterprations. these new remixes provide an intriguing parallax view of the original tracks, using the percussive eclecticism of the parent lp as a starting point from which to journey into sonically vibrant, feature-rich territories. the production specialists on hand for this project include burnt friedman and ricardo villalobos. villalobos, has already formed a strong working relationship with rohrer’s ambiq trio, lends his talents to both of the eps. (ror remixes i - amel-ep716). nonplace label boss friedman, as well, has carved out a unique space for himself within the electronic world, logging several decades’ worth of releases that with dub-wise production sensibility, skewed humor, and riots of tone color. though each individual remix has its own character, they are all united in their ability to provide a quick cure for fatigue with the common “loop”: though not improvised, they are strung together from fleeting phrases that evolve as if they are taking on a life independent of their creators. burnt friedman’s own dramatic interpretation of “microcosmoism” pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with rohrer’s continually transforming sound objects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative that simply dares listeners to stop paying attention. feeling more like a collaboration in “real time” than a remix proper, friedman brings his characteristic ‘mad scientist’ wit to the proceedings and delivers an energetic piece that simply glows in the dark. this is complemented nicely by villalobos’ remix of “microcosmoism”. it carries the energy level of the 1st ep over to a new disk, while heavily experimenting with feelings of emotional ambiguity. at some points aggressive and at other points merely curious, this mischievous collage of attitudes feels as inspired by the questing jazz of sun ra as it is by continental techno. contemplative keyboard runs, enthusiastic spring-like percussion and malfunctioning machine chatter all coalesce to make this a most fascinating piece of multi-purpose electronic music.

runemark records comes back with the seventh release and this time it s a perfection from dumming dum and rush midnight and their co-creation three pills into a fist including remixes from atapy, black mami and the first ever remix from ten walls. the original version from dumming dum sets a deep and groovy tone with acidic bass line and the wonderful rush midnight s creamy vocals on top. ten walls has made an official remix that grabs attention from the very start. it s ten-wall-ish bass line, orchestral and emotional breakdown construct dark and epic vibes. a beautiful trip through deepness and back to the dance floor is laid out in black mami s interpretation. and the last but not least remix in the release is a banger from atapy. dance-able as hell and the most energetic composition in the pack. dumming dum - three pills into a fist (feat. rush midnight) is available in vinyl and digital formats. enjoy the music!

seattle rapper/producer grieves emerged in 2007 with his independently released album, irreversible. in the years that followed, he wholly devoted himself to touring, writing and recording, honing his craft and defining his sound. his 2011 rhymesayers debut, together/apart, was a career landmark and a testament to his growth in both, his writing and delivery, and this progression was re-affirmed by his follow-up, winter & the wolves, in 2014. now, after three years, grieves prepares to reveal further evolution with the release of his new full-length album, running wild.
on running wild, grieves teamed up with swedish producer chords. together, the two have produced a modernized sound that is lush and intoxicating, pairing punchy drums with thick layers of synths and warm bass lines, all accented by soulful keys, horns, or guitars. whether dark and moody, or upbeat and jazzy, grieves navigates and complements the soundscape, penning verses that range from vulnerable and confessional, to fun and carefree. grieves is most certainly breaking boundaries, truly running wild, all while remaining honest to himself.

nick the record is one of the uk s most respected record dealers as well as a highly gifted dj of the underground disco, afro, soul, funk and house scene since the early 90s. for those who don t know he was 1/2 of soul ascendants that released some serious fela inspired house on nuphonic records in the late 90 s. he s currently enjoying a well deserved hype due to his heavy compilations on z records and various remixes. for his first release on gamm he goes all disco with two big reworks that are sure to get the heads moving. lifeforce theme is a tribute to the japan collective where he was resident dj for over 20 years. recordnition is a heavy percussion n philly disco burner that got that deep nyc disco feel all over it. nick definitely got the records.
